STORY PRIMER
Official story premise
A spoiler-light summary limited to the premise and characters introduced by Capcom.
01Kyoto under Malice
Capcom sets the game in early Edo-period Kyoto, where Malice has transformed the city and Genma threaten its people.
02Miyamoto Musashi
The official site presents Miyamoto Musashi as the protagonist and places the Oni Gauntlet at the centre of his conflict with the Genma.
03A new entry point, not an unrelated vocabulary set
In Capcom’s August 25 interview, director Satoru Nihei says the universe was rebuilt from the ground up, first-time players can jump in, and there are no direct storyline connections to earlier games. The same interview still describes recognisable series concepts—Genma, Oni and the gauntlet—so “newcomer-friendly” does not mean those ideas disappear.
04Rokudo Chinno-ji and the portal
The developer interview identifies Rokudo Chinno-ji as a central inspiration. In the game’s world, it contains a portal to hell. Oni are described as guarding that boundary and destroying Genma that cross it; when Malice overflows, more Genma enter the human realm. This explains why Kyoto, the Genma and the Oni Gauntlet belong in the same premise without requiring a full plot summary.
05Real Kyoto through a supernatural frame
Capcom uses recognizable Kyoto locations rather than an anonymous fantasy city. The interview discusses Kiyomizu-dera as one example and explains that the team rebuilt the setting around its own supernatural rules. The useful distinction is between a real place used as visual and cultural grounding and a claim that the game reproduces historical Kyoto exactly.
06What each official term establishes
This compact map is enough to follow the published premise before playing.
| Term | Published role in the premise | Question the game is left to answer |
|---|---|---|
| Early Edo-period Kyoto | The real-world setting transformed by Malice and the Genma crisis. | How each landmark is changed across the campaign. |
| Rokudo Chinno-ji | A core location associated with the boundary and portal to hell. | How Musashi reaches it and what happens there. |
| Malice | The overflow that allows Genma to cross into the human realm. | Its complete origin and later consequences. |
| Genma and Oni | Genma cross the boundary; Oni traditionally guard it and oppose them. | The full bestiary and every faction relationship. |
| Miyamoto Musashi | The protagonist who bears the Oni Gauntlet. | His later choices and relationships. |
07A spoiler-safe reading order
Read the official premise first, then the platform feature page if you need purchase information, and use trailers only if their published footage is acceptable to you. Avoid searching character names together with terms such as ending, boss or death if you want to preserve discoveries. This page does not embed a complete trailer transcript or repeat late-game marketing reveals merely to appear comprehensive.
08Spoiler boundary
This primer stops at the premise and developer context. It does not reproduce dialogue, late-game biographies, scene transcripts, endings or leaked files. Character and location pages will not be split out unless they can add verified annotation rather than rephrase promotional copy.
