02When each category opens
Most collectibles are gated by story progress, which is why a first sweep of Kyoto always leaves gaps. The key mission is What Lurks in the Shadows (mission 11): Lion Dogs and Mysteries of Kyoto both open after it.
| Milestone | What opens |
|---|---|
| The Oni’s Apprentice (mission 4) | Practice Grounds, skill tree, equipment enhancement |
| Mid-game, as Kyoto opens up | Chance Encounters (first two: Pale Lights in a Night Sky, Clear Space, Clear Mind) |
| What Lurks in the Shadows (mission 11) | Lion Dogs (talk to Lady Murasaki) and Mysteries of Kyoto |
| Each outer area’s final boss | Lion Dogs in that area appear only after it is liberated |
| Shuten Doji (mission 18) | The Awakening Oni Cloth for the last Hozuki Pouch |
| The Clash at Rendaino (mission 22) | Point of no return—free roam ends until the credits |
| After the final boss | The last Genma Note, via Continue |
03Lion Dogs and Lady Murasaki
Lion Dogs are small hidden statues. After What Lurks in the Shadows, Lady Murasaki explains them and marks a set of locations on your map with paw prints. Each milestone of six rescues earns a new sword appearance; they unlock in a fixed order and are cosmetic only, though each one also restyles the wakizashi.
| Area | Lion Dogs |
|---|---|
| Eastern Kyoto (the hub, including its southern and southwestern streets) | 21 |
| Mount Oe | 6 |
| Kiyomizu-dera Temple | 3 |
| Nijo-jo Castle and Kyoto Imperial Palace | 3 |
| Arashiyama | 3 |
04Lion Dog sword rewards
| Lion Dogs rescued | Sword appearance |
|---|---|
| 6 | Sakurahime |
| 12 | Shishioh |
| 18 | Myogo |
| 24 | Ura-giri |
| 30 | Mooncrossed |
| 36 | Kikoku |
With 21 of 36 in the hub, a careful Eastern Kyoto sweep after mission 11 gets you to Shishioh and most of the way to Myogo before you visit any outer area again.
05Genma Notes need Oni Vision
Genma Notes sit in chests that are invisible until you use Oni Vision, and they are the one collectible type the map never marks. Buy Oni Vision: Treasures and Search Range early. A simple rule covers most of them: every note named after a boss is found by returning to that boss’s arena after the fight and scanning with Oni Vision.
The rest are named after regular Genma and hidden in the areas where those enemies live.
| Where | Notes |
|---|---|
| Boss arenas (13) | Sasaki Ganryu, Daidara, Rasho-gan, Byakue, Ifuu, Nue, Greater Nue, Dohatsu-ten, Benkei, Burai, Shuten Doji, Dokyo, Yoshitsune |
| Eastern Kyoto streets (4) | Hitotsume Gasa (Higashioji Street), Kubi Akari (Kamo River), Togemaru (courtyard near Yorimasa’s Monument), Kogai (Gojo Street) |

| Mount Oe (2) | Oboro Garasu, Hirehime |
| Arashiyama (1) | Mohja |
| Kiyomizu-dera Temple (1) | Hitotsume Sho |
The Yoshitsune note only exists after the final fight. After the credits, choose Continue and scan the well behind Rokudo Chinno-ji Temple with Oni Vision.
06Mysteries of Kyoto (8)
Mysteries are multi-step investigations marked with a butterfly icon. They open after What Lurks in the Shadows, and two more unlock after The Demon on the Mount—finish that mission before trying to clear the list.

| Some Unfinished Monkey Business (Hanging Monkeys) | Eastern Kyoto | The Demon on the Mount | Oni Strength Charm |
07Chance Encounters (18)
Chance Encounters are shorter side jobs of three kinds: eight story requests from people around Kyoto (each pays a Charm), five Ace Archer trials and five Hidden Treasure hunts (both pay crafting materials and stones). They appear in batches as the story advances.
| Chance Encounter | Available after | Reward |

08Hozuki Pouch items (9)
The nine Hozuki items are four Oni Cloths—Regeneration, Aggressor, Resistance and Awakening, each creating a new pouch type—and five Skeleton Hozuki, each used for one pouch’s final upgrade. Several are inside Oni Gates in southeast and southwest Kyoto that open after you defeat the Genma guarding them. The Awakening cloth, northeast of the Yasaka Pagoda Spirit Mirror, only appears after Shuten Doji.
09Why totals differ between guides
You will see 273, 274 and 275 quoted as the total. The categories and the big counts match across sources; the gap comes from whether a guide counts a seventh Oni Armament and from one-off differences in the Power and Oni Stone totals. For trophies it does not matter—the trophies track each category, not a grand total.
10Cleanup checklist before the final mission
- Finish What Lurks in the Shadows, then talk to Lady Murasaki so Lion Dogs show on the map.
- Clear The Demon on the Mount before working through Mysteries of Kyoto—three depend on it.
- Revisit every boss arena with Oni Vision for its Genma Note.
- Grab Flashing Void (Mount Oe cave past the Castle Entrance Spirit Mirror) and Still Water (Arashiyama swamp tunnel past the Swamp 1 Spirit Mirror).
- Check the reward list at the start of each mission; mission-tied items are shown there.
- Make a separate manual save before The Clash at Rendaino.
- After the credits, Continue and collect the Yoshitsune Genma Note.
Free roam stays open until the final mission, and after the credits Continue returns you to just before it.

Frequently asked questions
How many collectibles are there?
Guides count between 273 and 275 trackable items across 11 main categories. The difference comes from counting methods, not missing items.
Are any collectibles missable?
No. Free roam stays available until the final mission and you can return after the credits.
When do Lion Dogs unlock?
After What Lurks in the Shadows (mission 11). Talk to Lady Murasaki and she marks them on your map; dogs in outer areas appear once that area is liberated.
What do Lion Dogs give you?
A new sword appearance every six rescues—Sakurahime, Shishioh, Myogo, Ura-giri, Mooncrossed and finally Kikoku at 36.
Why can’t I find the last Genma Note?
It is the Yoshitsune note, which only appears after the final boss. Continue after the credits and use Oni Vision at the well behind Rokudo Chinno-ji Temple.
