Combat systems confirmed by official guidance

A source-backed explanation of block, parry, deflect, Issen and dodge, without presenting untested boss tactics as fact.

01Start with the safest readable response

Xbox Wire describes blocking as effective against most attacks, including projectiles, while consuming stamina. It is the conservative response when an attack is unfamiliar.

02Parry and deflect have different jobs

The official Xbox guide says successful parries create an opening and repeated success builds the Blaze Gauge. A deflect combines block and attack at impact, deals substantial stamina damage and can help create a Break Issen opening.

03Issen and dodge

Xbox describes Issen as a last-moment attack with high risk. It recommends dodging fists and other threats that cannot be parried or deflected. These are system descriptions, not a claim that one response defeats every enemy.

04Response matrix

This is a reading aid derived from the official system descriptions, not a universal boss recipe.

Response matrix
ResponsePublished roleImportant limit
BlockBroad defence against most attacks and projectiles.Consumes stamina; a broken stance costs souls.
ParryCreates a short opening and builds the Blaze Gauge.Requires timing and is not published as valid for every attack.
DeflectBlock-plus-attack at impact; deals heavy stamina damage and can enable Break Issen. The cited input is the Xbox default and may differ elsewhere.
IssenA high-risk attack immediately before impact for high damage. No official frame window is published here.
DodgeThe published answer for fists and other threats that cannot be parried or deflected. The source does not say every punch or kick behaves identically.

05A low-risk learning sequence

The official descriptions imply a useful order for learning the vocabulary, even though they do not publish a universal training route. First observe while blocking, then distinguish a normal block from a timed parry, then add deflect when stamina damage matters. Treat Issen as a separate high-risk timing attempt, and retain dodge for threats the source says cannot be parried or deflected.

This sequence is an editorial learning model, not a claim about enemy AI or exact timing windows.

06Read the resources before chasing damage

The systems trade different resources and outcomes. Blocking consumes stamina; a broken stance can cost souls. Parries build the Blaze Gauge across successful uses. Deflect targets enemy stamina and may create a Break Issen opportunity. A decision is therefore not simply “which move deals most damage,” but which risk, resource and opening you are trying to manage.

Question during an encounterRelevant published systemEvidence still needed in play
Do I need the broadest defensive answer?BlockWhether this specific attack is one of the exceptions.
Do I want a short opening and Blaze progress?ParryThe readable cue and repeatable timing for this enemy.
Do I want stamina damage toward a break?DeflectWhether the attack can be deflected and which input layout is active.
Am I deliberately accepting a narrow high-risk window?IssenA reproducible cue; no frame count is published here.
Is the threat described as unparryable or undeflectable?DodgeDirection, spacing and follow-up for the exact situation.

07Input labels are platform-specific

The cited Xbox article uses LB, A and B under its default layout. Those labels should not be copied onto PlayStation or PC as universal controls, and remapping can change them even on Xbox. The stable part of this page is the system relationship—block, attack-at-impact and dodge—not a button legend.

08How to validate a future tactic

A defensible tactic needs the game version, difficulty, enemy or encounter, starting resources, input method, repeated attempts and a clear success condition. One successful clip can illustrate a possibility but cannot establish a guaranteed rule. Until those records exist, this page remains a system guide and does not publish boss-specific prescriptions.
