RELEASE
Onimusha: Way of the Sword release date and availability
The official date, supported platforms and the regional checks worth making before you buy.

01Release date
Capcom’s current corporate product details list September 4, 2026 worldwide. A North-American storefront can render September 3 when it converts the unlock to local time, so follow the countdown on the signed-in store where you will play.
02Supported platforms
Capcom lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. Check the product page for the version, language and release timing in your region before purchase.
| Platform | Best check before purchase |
|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | Your regional PlayStation Store listing and its unlock time. |
| Xbox Series X|S | Your Microsoft Store product page. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Your Nintendo eShop product page, storage requirement and language listing. |
| PC | Steam requirements, languages, storage and controller support. |
03Useful purchase check
These are the US Steam list prices visible at the time this guide was checked. Prices, tax and launch timing are regional; confirm the price and currency in the store account that will own the game.
| Store / edition | US list price | Language, install and loading notes |
|---|---|---|
| Steam — Standard | $69.99 | Steam lists 14 interface/subtitle languages, 11 full-audio languages, 50 GB available storage and an SSD requirement. |
| Steam — Deluxe | $79.99 | Base game plus the 9-item Deluxe Kit; see Editions for the exact contents. |
| Steam — Premium Deluxe | $89.99 | Base game plus the Deluxe Kit and 10-item Premium Kit. |
| PlayStation Store / Microsoft Store | Regional price | Check your logged-in store page: it is the authoritative price, entitlement and local unlock time for that platform. |
04Language, storage and loading
Steam lists English, French, Italian, German, Spanish (Spain), Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese with full audio; Arabic and Latin American Spanish are listed for interface and subtitles. Steam requires 50 GB available space on an SSD. Capcom has not published a single cross-platform loading-time figure, so do not rely on a retailer’s untested number.
05The confirmed date, and why it moved
Way of the Sword was revealed at The Game Awards on December 12, 2024 with a 2026 window. A PlayStation State of Play in June 2026 then named September 25. On July 1, Gematsu reported that CAPCOM had pulled the date to September 4, 2026. Coverage around that announcement pointed at a late-September pile-up — other big releases were clustering around the 24th — and at Capcom’s own 2026 calendar, which already included Resident Evil Requiem and Pragmata. Onimusha: Way of the Sword — Official Release Date Reveal Gameplay Trailer Steam currently lists “Sep 3, 2026” in some regions because the storefront follows local time; the intended global street date remains September 4. If you pre-ordered digitally, treat September 3 evening (Americas) / September 4 morning (Japan, Europe) as the unlock window and check your storefront’s preload notice rather than a social-media countdown. Physical copies — including the Americas Steelbook and the EMEA Lenticular and Premium Deluxe SteelBook SKUs — follow the same September 4 date. The official account confirmed a physical disc for PlayStation 5 after a week of “is this digital-only?” posts. Retailers that still show September 25 in product copy have not been updated; the publisher date is the one that matters. CAPCOM also said wishlists passed two million in the last fortnight before launch — a demand signal, not a review. Bonuses and the Early Adopter window live on the pre-order page.
06Every platform on day one
Unlike the original PS2 trilogy, Way of the Sword is a current-gen simultaneous launch. Nintendo confirmed the Switch 2 version in a June 2026 Direct, later than the other SKUs, with a ~31.9 GB download and TV, tabletop and handheld support. There is no PS4, Xbox One or Switch 1 version. For the console split — Quality 4K30 versus Performance 1440p–4K60 — see the platforms page. PC buyers should start on the system requirements checker because CAPCOM wants Windows 11, 16 GB of RAM and an SSD even at Low. If you are still choosing a version, the gameplay is the same. The editions breakdown is about cosmetics and charms, not extra campaign chapters. Pre-order bonuses (Lion Dog charm, Sealed Curse sword skin, plus White Monkey / White Lion on Deluxe and above) attach to digital purchases made before the regional cutoff.
- PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro — digital and physical, including Steelbook in some regions.
- Xbox Series X|S — Play Anywhere between console and Xbox PC.
- Nintendo Switch 2 — Game Key Card Steelbook in the Americas; file size listed at 31.9 GB.
- PC — Steam (AppID 2638890), Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store. Denuvo Anti-tamper, five activations per day.
07What to do in the last days before launch
The free demo is the highest-value use of the remaining time. Finish Kiyomizu-dera, fight Sasaki Ganryu, then push into the expanded Oni Refuge and Daidara. Completing the demo writes a save-data bonus — the Kubi Akari charm — that the full game reads on first boot. Demo progress itself does not import, so treat the run as a combat classroom rather than a head start on collectibles. On PC, install the demo and the official benchmark if your storefront offers it, then confirm DLSS or FSR is actually engaging. Digital Foundry’s preview of the console demo found a locked 30 FPS Quality mode and a strong Performance mode; the PC side still depends on your card staying above CAPCOM’s Low floor. An HDD will not do — the notes say SSD required. If you care about the story going in, read the story primer and the character pages rather than old Onimusha plot recaps. CAPCOM has said this campaign is not tied to Dawn of Dreams or the Netflix series. New players are the intended audience. Returning fans still get Genma, the Oni Gauntlet, soul colours, and Issen — the series language is intact even if the plot is a clean break. CAPCOM has described a roughly 20-hour single-player campaign. Plan a weekend if you want to finish in one sitting; plan two if you intend to learn Issen properly instead of button-mashing through Action difficulty. The walkthrough will expand with full-game routes after launch; until then it maps the demo and the locations already shown (Kiyomizu-dera, Dokyo’s lab, Mount Oe).
08Launch-week expectations
Day-one patches are standard for RE Engine titles. Keep a few extra gigabytes free above the 50 GB PC install. Console players should leave an evening for the download plus the patch, not just the install. Review embargoes lifted on 31 August — the review page now carries Metacritic 86, OpenCritic 86 and the named outlet scores. gamescom 2026 had already given the game Best Gameplay and Best Sony PlayStation Game. Capcom TV runs a launch-eve special on 3 September at 20:00 JST with the development team. After the game is live this page will shift from countdown copy to patch notes, trophy timing, and post-launch DLC. The date itself will not move again unless CAPCOM says so in public. Bookmark the how to play guide for the first night and the combat overview for the second.

September 4, 2026 worldwide on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. North America can start the evening of September 3 (9 p.m. PDT / midnight EDT). Some Steam pages show September 3 because of time zone conversion. See launch times.

Will it be on Game Pass or PS Plus Extra at launch?
CAPCOM has not announced a subscription-day-one plan. Buy or pre-order on the storefront you actually play on.
Is there preload?
