WORLD GUIDE

Kyoto map and location notes

Use landmarks, safe points and route purpose to orient yourself in a Malice-warped Edo-period Kyoto.

An ink-and-wash Kyoto travel map with shrine paths and waterways

01Read the world as a route

The official setting is early Edo Kyoto reshaped by Malice. For navigation, concentrate on practical cues such as gates, bridges, shrine approaches, temple interiors and Spirit Mirrors.

02Write a reliable location note

A location note needs where you enter, a landmark and a purpose.

RecordUseful example
Entry pointNorth gate after shrine approach
LandmarkStone lantern beside broken bridge
PurposeOptional side room; revisit after access unlock

03When a route is blocked

Check the active objective, inspect nearby interaction prompts and test the shortest visible branch you have not tried before assuming a hidden item is required.

04Kyoto under Malice

Official copy: the historic capital, twisted by malevolent clouds of Malice, every stage cloaked in mystery. Nihei told PlayStation.Blog the world is centred on the real Rokudo Chinno-ji Temple, that Genma spill through portals when Malice overflows, and that Oni exist to guard those gates. Impulse-response audio was recorded inside actual Kyoto temples. Kennin-ji’s Twin Dragons ceiling is in the game even though it is historically later than Edo — they wanted the awe of walking in today. That is a tone plus a few pins, not a fast-travel list. If you want the plot reason the city is sick, read the story primer. If you want the people waiting in these rooms, read characters. This page is the places.

05Kiyomizu-dera

The opening spine and the entire original demo. Capcom worked with temple officials so the layout would fit the period — Nihei said the wooden pillars under the stage match the real count. Stair runs, a courtyard that wants carts and tatami, a view over the basin, and a duel stage for Sasaki Ganryu. The demo walkthrough is the room-by-room. Screenshot 10 on this site is the postcard.

06Oni Refuge

Added in the August 2026 demo update. Tighter, darker, group fights, the Oni Bow, Ifuu and Burai as first reads, and Daidara at the end. The dedicated Oni Refuge page is the route. Whether it is a Kyoto annex or a fold into the Oni world is not labelled on a public map yet.

07Dokyo’s laboratory and Mount Oe

The lab sits under Kyoto because the work cannot happen in daylight. Game Informer described a ghost-house: shoji shadows of failed fusions, kimonos hanging from rafters, a pig-hybrid lifted and discarded. Okuni is why Musashi goes down. Producer stills already exist. This is the horror chapter, closer to the series’ Resident Evil ancestry than the temple duels are. Mount Oe is a real mountain restaged as Shuten Doji’s fortress. Colossal Genma, folklore name, Anthony Howell on the English track. Treat it as the spectacle chapter. Yasui Konpira is the real Gion-district shrine Capcom used for Rashōgan. Rokudo Chinno-ji is the temple Nihei named as the cosmological centre — the place Malice and the Oni gateways are built around. Director memo #28 (January 2026) also confirmed Oni Portals: otherworldly rooms found with Oni Vision, with Oni-made mechanisms rather than Kyoto streets.

08How to use this page at launch

We will add named rooms, Spirit Mirror stops, and collectible counts as they are verified. We will not add a fake fog-of-war. If you are here for charms, the mirrors are the gates — they will be pinned on this map when their rooms are public. If you are here to not get lost in the demo, you want the walkthrough, not a city atlas.

FAQよくある質問

Is Onimusha: Way of the Sword open world?

No. Director Satoru Nihei has said it is not. Linear spine, open pockets, side content.

Can I visit real Kyoto landmarks besides Kiyomizu-dera?

Mount Oe, Yasui Konpira and Rokudo Chinno-ji are named. Oni Portals lead off the Kyoto streets. A full landmark list is still being written after launch.

Is there a fast travel map?

Not shown. Older Onimusha titles used magic mirrors; Spirit Mirrors are the named analogue here.

Does the demo include Mount Oe?

No. The demo is Kiyomizu-dera plus the Oni Refuge. Mount Oe is a campaign location.
