FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Short answers to common purchase, setup and first-session questions.
01Do I need earlier Onimusha games?
No. Official material introduces a new Miyamoto Musashi in Kyoto, and this guide’s starting route does not assume series homework.
02Where can I play?
Capcom and Steam list PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Check your regional store for availability and timing.
03What if I keep dying?
Pick the attack that beats you, watch it once without attacking, then practise one defensive answer. Combat and Parry & Deflect expand that method.
04Does the pre-order sword increase damage?
No. Steam describes the Sealed Curse sword appearance as cosmetic; it does not change battle performance.

07Swordplay that rewards a read
Director Satoru Nihei has said this is not a Soulslike. Combat is blade-on-blade: you watch the cut, choose a defensive tool, then spend the opening. FAQよくある質問
When does Onimusha: Way of the Sword come out?
CAPCOM locked a worldwide street date of September 4, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. North America can start the evening of September 3 (9 p.m. PDT / midnight EDT). Steam may show September 3 because of time zones. See the launch-times page.
What are the review scores?
As of early September 2026 Metacritic is 86 (generally favorable) and OpenCritic is 86 with about 95 percent of critics recommending. IGN scored 10/10. Common praise is the sword; common criticism is campaign pacing. Details on the review page.
Is there a free demo?
Yes. A playable demo launched in June 2026 on PS5, Xbox and PC, then expanded with the Oni Refuge and boss Daidara. A Switch 2 demo followed. Completing it unlocks the Kubi Akari charm in the full game; save progress itself does not carry over.
Is Onimusha: Way of the Sword a Soulslike?
No. Director Satoru Nihei has said outright that it is not a Soulslike and not an open world. Difficulty options exist, missed parries usually collapse into a normal block, and the design goal is readable sword clashes rather than attrition.
Who do you play as?
Miyamoto Musashi, modelled after actor Toshiro Mifune after a two-year negotiation with Mifune Productions. He arrives in Kyoto to prove he has no equal with a blade, then becomes bound to the Oni Gauntlet.
How long is the campaign?
CAPCOM has described a roughly 20-hour single-player campaign. Side paths and open pockets exist inside a mostly linear structure.
