DEMO

The official demo: what to test before you buy

Use the demo to judge control comfort, readability and swordplay. It is a snapshot, not proof that every full-game rule is identical.

A mysterious Spirit Mirror in a moonlit shrine courtyard

01What the demo lets you inspect

Capcom’s demo feature shows Musashi using a Spirit Mirror and highlights Photo Mode, Oni Vision and soul absorption. The PlayStation demo listing also identifies Sasaki Ganryu and Daidara as bosses, and says demo save data does not transfer; completing it earns the Kubi Akari charm in the full game.

02A focused 30-minute test

Use the demo as a structured trial rather than a single run.

  • 0–5 minutes: set subtitle, brightness, camera and controller options exactly as you would for the full game.
  • 5–10 minutes: walk every visible branch once; use interaction prompts and identify the route back to the last Spirit Mirror.
  • 10–18 minutes: replay one basic encounter without trying for speed—watch the tell, block or move safely, take one short punish, then reset spacing.
  • 18–24 minutes: repeat the encounter and attempt one precision response only after you can survive the pattern.
  • 24–30 minutes: open Photo Mode, test Oni Vision and soul absorption, then decide whether the interface and performance are comfortable.

03Demo versus full game

Do not assume every reward, unlock, difficulty option or progression rule transfers unchanged. Check your platform storefront for the current demo availability.

04Use the demo as a purchase checklist

Before closing the demo, answer four concrete questions: can I read the HUD, can I perform a defensive response on purpose, is the camera comfortable during a close duel, and is performance acceptable on my own platform? A yes/no answer to these is more useful than a vague first impression.

05Where to download it

Search your storefront for “Onimusha: Way of the Sword Demo” rather than the full game. On Steam the demo is a separate app, AppID 3974650, listed under the main game’s page. Epic Games Store and the Xbox / Microsoft Store also ship a standalone demo. PlayStation 5 owners grab it from the PS Store listing. Nintendo Switch 2 received its build later; if the tile is missing, update the shop cache and search again — Capcom posted the Switch 2 demo alongside extra content in late August 2026. If the store says you already own it but the icon is gone, check the hidden-items filter on PS5 and the “Tools” / “Demos” shelf on Steam. The file is smaller than the 50 GB full PC install but still wants an SSD. Install it on the same drive you plan to use for launch so the spec checker results match what you felt in the temple.

  • PlayStation 5 — PS Store, search the game name and choose Demo.
  • Xbox Series X|S — Microsoft Store / Xbox app, standalone demo tile.
  • PC Steam — app 3974650, linked from the main 2638890 store page.
  • PC Epic — demo listing on the Way of the Sword product page.
  • Nintendo Switch 2 — shop search; confirmed after the original June drop.

06What the original demo taught

The first build dropped you at historic Kiyomizu-dera, walked you through block, deflect, parry, Issen, Oni Armament and manual soul absorb, then closed on a duel with Sasaki Ganryu on the temple stage. Length sat around 30–40 minutes depending on deaths and how long you stared at the view. Action and Story difficulty were both selectable; Action is the default “I play action games” setting, not a masochist flag. That loop is still the best place to learn the kit. Do not sprint to Ganryu. Spend time on the first human and Genma packs until a mistimed Issen becomes a block instead of a panic roll. The Issen guide and the parry and deflect guide exist because the demo throws every verb at you in half an hour and most players try to use all of them at once. Onimusha: Way of the Sword — Expanded Demo Trailer CAPCOM’s own expanded-demo trailer (embedded above) is the cleanest overview of the new Oni Refuge chunk: more Genma, a different architecture, and Daidara waiting at the end. Watch it once, then play; the trailer is a promise, not a route map. For a room-by-room path use the demo walkthrough.

07The August expansion

On August 26, 2026 Capcom pushed an update: go beyond the Ganryu duel, enter the Oni Refuge, and fight Daidara. Completing the new boss twice, or landing ten Issen in a run (the counter on the left of the HUD turns gold at ten), opens a Special Challenge against Byakue, The Hundred Defilements — a boss previewers had already named from longer studio sessions. That challenge is optional. The save-data bonus does not require it. The expansion is why “I already finished the June demo” is not a reason to skip the file. Kubi Akari still unlocks from a complete run, and the extra arena is the only legal way to practise giant-club timing before launch day. If you only have an hour, do Ganryu then Daidara; if you have two, farm the ten Issen and peek at Byakue.

08Kubi Akari and what does not carry over

Finish the demo and the full game will grant Charm: Kubi Akari on first load after you link the same platform account. PlayStation.Blog’s 25 August 2026 briefing adds a second clause the older store copy omitted: the same completion flag also boosts Musashi’s stats. Demo souls, sword skins and map completion still do not import. CAPCOM is using the demo as a skill check and a marketing slice, not as chapter zero of the campaign. Once you own an edition of the full game, Kubi Akari sits next to Lion Dog and the Deluxe charms in the same equipment screen. It is a reason to finish the file even if you already know you can beat Ganryu. For a checkbox list of every demo objective, use How to complete the demo.

FAQFrequently asked questions

Does the Onimusha demo cost anything?

No. It is free on every announced platform that currently has a storefront build.

Can I transfer demo save data into the full game?

No. Only a completion flag carries: the Kubi Akari charm plus a Musashi stat boost, per PlayStation.Blog (25 August 2026). Levels, items and map progress reset.

Is the Switch 2 demo the same as PS5?

It is the same content slice. Performance and file size differ. Nintendo’s shop listed the full game at 31.9 GB; the demo is smaller.
