Swordplay that rewards a read
Director Satoru Nihei has said this is not a Soulslike. Combat is blade-on-blade: you watch the cut, choose a defensive tool, then spend the opening. Issen is the series signature and still the tightest window in the kit. Combat system One-handed and two-handed attacks, Blade Barrage, Blade Lock, Blazing State, Oni Armaments, and why “playing dirty” with carts and tatami is official policy. Read the guide Controls (Basic vs Active) PlayStation, Xbox and default mouse-and-keyboard maps for both control types — plus which layout to pick if you learned on older action games.
