DEMO ROUTE

Onimusha: Way of the Sword — Demo walkthrough

A route through Kiyomizu-dera, Ganryu, Oni Refuge and the expansion challenges.

01Before you leave the first yard

Spend two minutes in the opening space even if the game is waving you forward. Confirm which control type you selected — Basic keeps guard on L1/LB, Active moves attacks onto the right face cluster. Lock that choice now. Switching mid-demo is how people “lose” Issen. Hold the guard button and walk around a training enemy until the all-angle block feels boring. Boring is the point; the kit is built on that hold. Yellow souls heal, red souls bank toward upgrades, blue souls fuel Oni Armaments. Absorption is manual — hold the Armament / absorb input (R1 / RB / R on the default PC map). Unlike the PS2 games you can walk while you drink. Do it between packs, never during a string. The soul guide is the longer version of that sentence.

02Kiyomizu-dera

The temple is a linear spine with pockets: stairs, wooden stages, a courtyard that wants you to throw a cart or lift a tatami mat as a shield. CAPCOM has said in so many words that playing dirty is allowed. Use the furniture. Ranged Genma exist to teach Deflect — hold guard and tap the assigned face button to send the arrow home. If you only roll, you will feel the demo is “just another action game.” It is not; the projectile return is a resource. Stealth takedowns appear on isolated enemies. They are optional and they drop extra souls. Take them when the path is obvious; do not reset a room for them. Oni Vision, once the gauntlet offers it, outlines remaining threats. Use it after a messy fight so you do not walk past a red soul cluster. Onimusha: Way of the Sword demo playthrough on Action difficulty The full Action-difficulty run embedded above is a clean 4K reference for pacing — including the Ganryu close. Pause it when a room looks unfamiliar, then play the room yourself. Copying inputs from a no-hit clip is how people fail the real Issen window; the Issen page explains why the beat is later than your instinct.

03Sasaki Ganryu, then keep going

The original demo ended on the temple stage against Sasaki Ganryu. He is a human rival with an Oni Gauntlet of his own, not a stamina sponge. Pick one defensive tool and repeat it. Parry his three-hit poke (the last swing glows red and shreds your stamina if it lands). Deflect if you want safer stagger. Dodge if you cannot stand the parry timing yet. Issen is a bonus, not a requirement. After the cutscene, the expanded file continues instead of kicking you to the title card.

04Oni Refuge and Daidara

The Refuge is tighter, darker, and more willing to throw groups. Chain Issen is the group answer — land one Issen, then steer the slow-motion follow-ups into neighbours. It does not work on bosses. Blue-telegraph grabs still want the contextual counter, not a parry. If a swing is marked in a way the tutorial already called “grab,” press the interact / counter face button, not guard. Daidara waits at the end with a three-hit club string (four in phase two, with a hitch before the last). Parry the string, especially the closer. When he charges, stand near a wall, dodge through, and let him eat wood. His grab steals souls and chips every gauge — treat it like Ganryu’s grab, only greedier. Beat him twice, or bank ten Issen in the run, to open Byakue as a Special Challenge. That fight is practice for launch, not a demo completion requirement.

05Leaving the demo

When the credits or the “thanks for playing” card appears, you have done enough for Kubi Akari. Jump into the completion checklist if you want the Issen counter gold before you uninstall. Otherwise put the file down, read the how to play page once, and wait for September 4. The campaign will reuse these rooms’ verbs at a longer length, not a different language.

FAQFrequently asked questions

How long is the expanded demo?

Plan 40–70 minutes for a first clear including Daidara. Faster if you already know Ganryu; longer if you hunt ten Issen and Byakue.

Which difficulty should I pick?

Action if you play character-action games. Story if you want the plot and the sightseeing. Both teach the same buttons.

Do I need to beat Byakue for the charm?

No. Kubi Akari is tied to completing the demo path, not the Special Challenge.

Can I miss the Oni Refuge?

Not if your copy is updated. The June build stopped at Ganryu; the August patch continues automatically after that duel.
